Favorite Farm Gear: Winter

~Montana winters are no joke, there is definitely a need for good outdoor clothing if you are going to be out in the elements caring for livestock. Here is a roundup of what I wear and would recommend for the coldest months, we see sub zero temps for weeks on end and it is not uncommon for us to reach -30’s not even including the wind chill, which can also be a brutal bear of its own! We will be in the thirties and everyone will be out in hoodies and t shirts thinking its a heat wave! Love Montanans, quite the bunch!~

Dovetail Workwear Pants https://dovetailworkwear.com/collections/thermal/products/britt-utility-grey-thermal-denim?variant=39697013768226 They are just about the perfect winter work pants. There are days that I still need a heavier pant, but these work good for me down to about -10 degrees Fahrenheit and then I wear nothing but a thicker coverall/overall at that point! But for going to my day job and my farm job, there is nothing better than Dovetail pants. They may be a bit pricey but I think they are worth it. Also and all around bad ass company!!

Carhartt Quilt Lined Overalls https://www.carhartt.com/product/102743/loose-fit-weathered-duck-insulated-biberall The link is the closest I can find to the old ones I’ve got. Mine are chocolate brown and have been very loved and worn for approx 10 years. Not until farm life did I wear them as much so, mostly been worn last 7 years. They are warm and block the wind great. Worn with some good wool layers, you will never get cold! We regularly have consistent below zero temps and -30 degrees Fahrenheit and lower are pretty common! Montana winters are no joke, especially North East Montana! Wind chills hit -50 degrees Fahrenheit with ease in the winter. So around here we say, “there is no bad weather, just bad clothing” !!!!

Smart Wool Merino 250 Base Layer https://www.smartwool.com/shop/womens-merino-250-base-layer-bottom-sw019242?variationId=010 My absolute go to for a long john, I pretty much wear them from Nov. to Mar. with the exception of some warm days! They are not itchy at all, which most people don’t believe…it’s true!! They are easily washed, just like all other clothes, no chance of shrinking! Don’t ask me how they do it! And they are dang warm! I even wear them under the lined dovetail pants on the chilly days, and they regulate the warmth very well, I’m never too hot in them!

Dovetail Workwear Jeans https://dovetailworkwear.com/collections/pants/products/britt-utility-indigo?variant=7413027536930 Absolute favorite pair of work jeans everrrrrrr. Believe me I have tried every kind of womens workwear pants there is! Hands down the best fit, most comfortable and damn durable!!

Duckworth Wool Jacket https://www.duckworthco.com/collections/womens-heavy-weight/products/womens-woolcloud-full-zip-jacket This is a splurge for me, just bought this with a huge discount code and so far am loving it!! It is lightweight but very warm, as well as stops the wind from invading the coat. Easy to layer under or over, and a great color of brown/tan! I always opt for a black Eddie Bauer down jacket but am tired of littering the world with my feathers because of how hard I am on my coats! Oh and the shipping for it takes like four months!! Duckworth has a great mission, all facilities from start to finish of the wool are here in the USA, providing jobs and great textiles in our own country! The main reason that I buy their stuff is that and the quality! They have a powder pant that is discontinued that is the best jogger type pants I own!

Carhartt Beanie https://www.amazon.com/Carhartt-Acrylic-Watch-A18-Black/dp/B002G9UDYG/ref=sr_1_2?crid=YIWAJB4CXYFD&keywords=carhartt%2Bbeanie&qid=1643068059&sprefix=carhartt%2Caps%2C157&sr=8-2&th=1&psc=1 One of the best hats made, classic Carhartt watchman hat. Its totally the IN thing to wear these days, but also works well. I love the amount of color choices and it doesn’t bag out after being worn alot!

Arctic Sport Muck Boots https://www.murdochs.com/products/womens/footwear/winter-boots/muck-boots-womens-arctic-ice-tall-boot/ I’m not 100% in love with my mucks, but they do keep my feet dry and warm. Though after a couple seasons, they have ripped on the rubber bend and are garbage if the weather is wet/slushy. The ones I linked do not have the same problem as the mens older version, which is what i do own. The linked muck boots do not look like they will bend into a rip the way mine did. These will probably be the next ones i order.

Carhartt Hoodie https://www.murdochs.com/products/womens/clothing/sweatshirts/carhartt-womens-clarksburg-graphic-sleeve-pullover-sweatshirt/ One of the best hoodies you will own, they are well made, soft but durable, and one of the highest quality sweatshirts out there. Looking to order a mustard one next!! They are always rolling out new colors, but the same quality and style. I’m a sucker for printing on the sleeve too, I just love that!

Duckworth Maverick Long Sleeve Shirt https://www.duckworthco.com/collections/womens-shirts/products/womens-maverick-peak-long-sleeve-crew A great under shirt, not itchy, nice weight, and all around a good shirt for under or just as is alone. All of Duckworth products are pretty awesome, they are spendy, but when you look at the grand scheme of things, they are a great company and its all made in our great nation! The sheep, the wool, the fabrication, the sewing, all of it!!! Think about all those American jobs!! So I always actually feel good about it, and none of mine has worn out with a lot of use!!! High quality, and a great company!!

Eddie Bauer Down Jacket https://www.eddiebauer.com/p/20612655/women's-cirruslite-down-hooded-jacket?sp=1&color=Black&size= A great jacket for its weight, you can wear it over or under another jacket and not be too bulky! Its usually on sale for around 50 bucks and is pretty good for its price! I have worn them for years, my last one was a heavier weight and that was a little better but this one will layer a little better! They definitely are not tear resistant, so if you are rough on your coat carry a roll or sheet of patches, at least if you are as wild as I am!! LOL!!

hat from www.overland.com

These are my top 10 must haves for a cold winter!!
